The Journey

This was a very exciting Journey

Great participants, many good moments along the way, great discovery, fantastic flying, great weather etc...

Here is the chart of what we have done

A total of 10545 nm from the airplane log, a total of 37.6 hours on the hobbs meter at an average ground speed of 281 kts.

I have already created the program for next year, a month earlier and come changes along the way.

The most important will be the replacement of the cruise on the Amazon with a Cruise to the Galapagos and more time in Arequipa

Thank you for following the adventures of Air Journey.

The next one is the Journey Around the World leaving may 12, 2014

The Sandy Lane Barbados

Air Journey has a way to find the best place to stay in most places.

Sandy Lane has been a beautiful setup on the island of Barbados for many years.

This is when you leave, you have to be seated to review the bill....it is surprising...

Now it is time to leave

we are traveling light

we flew over St Croix and wave our winds to Doug.

Another view of the Cayenne experience.

When you fly from South America back to the Caribbean, Cayenne is a must stop on the way. As a pilot point of view, the infrastructure of the airport is very good. They offer a nice runway, good support, radar coverage and good fuel.

As shown in a previous post, the approach is somehow daunting on paper but easily done in reality.

After complaining of the hight cost of taxi...50 Euros or $68.00 for a mere 20 mn ride to town each way and each cab...( this is close to the price you pay in Paris......) I was not ready for the filing of the flight plan.

While escorting a group, I often arrive at the airport ahead of the participants to settle the bills, make sure all is ready etc...

In this case I even check with Control about the flight plan procedure for our Sunday morning departure.

"No Problem" I was told, just come to the window with your flight plan and we will file then on the spot.

Upon arrival the next day we had to wait for Immigration and Police (PAF) to clear us on the ramp...about 20 mn wait time...which gave plenty of time for the participants to catch up with me.

Then we had to drop our luggage on a moving carrousel to have them checked before boarding our plane. we then walk at the other end of the room to go thru the checkpoint...there we are told that the backpay and purse need to go also on the carousel. Back track to the carousel and then back to the checking point.....Don't you think they should know the procedure before making us all walk back and fourth in the EMPTY terminal.

Then it is time for me to file the flight plan......I go the office, lights on, computer on, car parked in front, ring the bell.....no movement.

After a third attempt i go across the hall to get the weather brief for our leg.

Back to the bell. ring again no answer and no movements

Went back to the terminal to pay the landing fees and inquire about the flight plan.

The Chamber of Commerce Representative call in front of me the 4 digit extension of the "Bureau de Piste" to see if he gets an answer....

After several ring, we have a voice on the phone answering as "Martinique"

The local employe had forwarded the calls to more than 1000 nm away since he was taking his sunday off...may be to offset his RTT.... a french term meaning to recoup the hours your have worked above the 35 hours you are suppose to do in one week.....

I was handed the phone over to file the flight plan over the phone...when he learned about the 3 airplanes, he asked me to fax them to him....

The Chamber of Commerce had a fax available and they very nicely fax them over but not before me emailing them to the Chamber for them to print and then fax..

Are we leaving in the 21st century? how come a center does not have an email address? how come no one at the airport is aware of the opening hours of the bureau de piste? I do speak fence and all of these make it easier for me to start to try to understand....imagine the foreigner dealing with this.

Bottom line...Can France offer a service to the Public like it is claiming or is it the continuation of the trend of the past 30 years....the public is not part of the "Public Service".

I did speak with that service the day before, I was not told it would be closed on Sunday, no one at the airport was aware of the closure etc.....

Why does the French government spend millions in infrastructure, millions in salaries to public employe and when they are needed no one is there. Do it properly or fire everyone and save some money for needed program...This is really ridiculous....Can someone tell me how many flight plan are filed by this office on a monthly basis and how many people do work there?????

And of course there is no one to express this "situation" and of course no one is in charge or responsible.

I guess next year we will file for Surinam or the other Guyana, we might get the same service but at least we will be expecting this.

The Brief and flight to Barbados

On this flight we are leaving South America to enter the Caribbean.

An area of the world we know and where we understand all the local customs. And we are ready for that.

Plus the hotel we are going to, is a very nice one.

Yes I know that the Mustang  to take a little more fuel than a TBM, but this is overdoing it...

Cayenne overnight

We are staying at the Ker Alberte hotel, a French four start rating place in downtown Cayenne.

Very friendly and understanding management, the owner Laurent  was there to great us and make our stay enjoyable

we had a french dinner with some Rum Agricole and liquid sugar cane sugar and lime....this is a great drink to learn the l,coal language after 2 bottle everyone was fluent in French,...easy with a 50% proof ...

we all had a big truck going over us that evening but we did sleep well

Brief to Cayenne

For this one I am doing the brief and the flight at the same time to get you, the reader in the mood

For this leg we are flying off shore.

This one the thing to do on take-off since w head some heavy shower to our left over Macapa.

The Brazilian approved all our request for deviation and gene help one of us to stay clear of the weather.

It is a short flight, only 1:30 mn for the Mustang.

During the flight we start to listen to the ATIS.

The ATIS is an hourly report of the weather condition at the airport where we are going and usually you can less these about 200 nm out...we did but the now we had was 50 mn old...and was giving us a dream of weather, visibility light wind no rain and no cloud....perfect....but lets get the latest one since we are seeing clouds there.

It came at 10 mn past the hour and we got it while we were on the approach , the good weather was gone, the weather radar was on and this was going to be a very wet approach. I made sure all was secure in the plane...but lucky for us no bumps..

This is the arrival in Cayenne......looks like we are going to land at Atlanta or Kennedy airport .

Leave it to the french to confirm their Motto: Why make it simple if you can make it complicated...they must have more traffic than Orly and De Gaulle in Paris combined.

In any case all of this is in the box and we have the ILS programmed too....by the way we have 3 ils for the same runway to choose from....why not...

After landing we had the visit of a very nice Custom agent, we have him our paperwork and all went very well. A nice man.

we transfer to the hotel, but we had to wait for taxis, even with the daily departure for the Air France Airbus 340, there were no taxi to be found....

Here is the video of the approach

On our day to Belem

I was up early and went to the airport to file the flight plans and pay the fees.

I am getting good at that.

Timing was perfect, I felt an hour before the participants at 06:30 and everything was ready at 08:00 for a speedy departure

weather seems ok

Beautiful from 40,000 feet

The approach in Belem was fine

as we started we were told the airport is IFR with 1000 feet and a 1000 meter visibility

we could see the Amazon

Our captain was ready

Flying over the city we could see the airport and the landing was assured.

Then started a long 3 hours of paperwork, custom, immigration, and flight Plan filing and paying the darn fees...3 hours while keeping an eye on the weather to make sure we will make it to our destination
